Whats on in Taupo this month

Taupo Pathways Employers Evening - 9th August

Brand new circus on its very first tour in New Zealand.

Come along to our Employers Evening in support of the Youth of our district and tell us what NCEA means to you as an employer.

Taupo Pathways invites employers to our first Employers Evening for the year. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a time of networking with nice food and beverages on arrival, to hear about our future plans, to learn how we can support the employers of our district and to contribute towards the NCEA review.

Taupo Pathways has been asked by the Ministry of Education to consult with our Districts employers about the NCEA review and we value your input into the discussion.

Our speakers and discussion panel include the Taupo Pathways Chairman, a representative to explain the proposed NCEA changes, a local employer to give an employers perspective, Peter Moyle Principal of Taupo-Nui-a-Tia College and Keith Buntting Principal of Tauhara College.

Businesses across NZ need a diverse and highly capable workforce. Literacy and numeracy, along with digital and financial skills, are important to employers. A students capability in critical thinking, problem solving and team work are also important and we’ve heard that it’s not always easy to tell what a young person can do from their NCEA record of achievement.

Qualifications that demonstrate a students knowledge, skills, attitude and capabilities are fundamental to the success of work placements and the ability to meet employer expectations. It is important that young people entering the workforce are 'work ready' - does the current NCEA accreditation ensure this? What needs to be done to improve the system? This is your opportunity to have your say on the education system in NZ!

A Ministerial Advisory Group led the development of the Discussion Documents that proposed six Big Opportunities for the NCEA review. These Big Opportunities formed the starting point for public engagement, which opened on Sunday 27 May.

These 6 Big Opportunities are as follows:
- Creating space at NCEA Level 1 for powerful learning
- Strengthening literacy and numeracy
- Ensuring NCEA Levels 2 and 3 support good connections beyond schooling
- Making it easier for teachers, schools, and kura to refocus on learning
- Ensuring the Record of Achievement tells us about students’ capabilities
- Dismantling barriers to NCEA

We want to understand what is important to employers when hiring young people.

We encourage you to attend - it's a great chance to meet your fellow employers, educate yourself a little on Taupo Pathways and NCEA and enjoy drinks and nibbles with us.

New Zealand is one of the most picturesque and photogenic places on earth. A small island nation of less than 4.5 million people. New Zealand is made up of two major land masses, the North Island and the South Island. These islands are divided by a 22km stretch of sea called the Cook Strait, (named after Captain James Cook, the english explorer that discovered New Zealand in 1769.

New Zealand is located in the south west pacific ocean, aproximately 1,500kms southeast of Australia.Due to its relitive remoteness and being water locked, New Zealand is one of the last places on earth to be disovered and settlled.

This country is made up of some of the worlds most spectacular landscapes, from vast mountain ranges to sweeping coastlines, making the perfect background for high budget movies such as Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by Peter Jackson. New Zealand is a natural playground for thrill seekers and adventurers and those who simply just want to visit for the culture and landscapes.
